Preparing a Home for Extreme Heat

Use a short readiness check before dangerous heat arrives, with household safety and local guidance ahead of equipment tinkering.

Follow local heat alerts first. Make sure people have a safe cooling plan, usable drinking water and communication, and only perform ordinary, manual-approved cooling maintenance—then use qualified help for equipment trouble, electrical concerns, or unsafe indoor heat.

Start with people and the local heat plan

Before a heat event, check local alerts and identify where household members can cool down if the home cannot stay safe. Ready.gov advises people to stay in air-conditioned places when possible, use local cooling centers when needed, drink fluids, and check on people at greater risk. A home checklist does not replace public-health or emergency direction.

Keep phones charged, have emergency and utility contacts available, and make a plan for children, older adults, pets, medications, and anyone whose health or mobility changes the response. If someone shows signs of a heat-related emergency, use local emergency guidance promptly rather than trying to solve the home system first.

Make the home easier to use safely

Close blinds or curtains where direct sun is heating a room, use the cooling equipment you already understand according to its instructions, and keep indoor pathways clear. These are comfort and preparedness steps, not a promise that every room or home will remain safe during extreme heat or an outage.

If this is owner-maintained, note rooms that become unusually hot, condensation or moisture that recurs, and any unusual equipment noise or odor. Record the date and conditions. If you live in a condo, townhome, or managed community, check with your HOA or building management about common equipment, outage procedures, and responsibility before acting.

Keep cooling maintenance in its lane

ENERGY STAR recommends inspecting, cleaning, or changing central heating and cooling filters as appropriate for the system. Use the equipment manual and the installed filter label for a user-serviceable filter task; do not open panels, access wiring, motors, refrigerant components, or rooftop equipment.

Call a qualified HVAC professional for a system that will not operate normally, repeatedly trips a breaker, produces burning smells, leaks, makes unfamiliar noises, or cannot keep the home at a safe temperature. Do not treat a portable fan, a thermostat change, or a replacement filter as a diagnosis for an equipment failure.

Prepare for heat plus an outage

A heat event can become more dangerous when power or air conditioning is unavailable. Keep battery-powered lighting, drinking water, a way to receive local information, and transportation or cooling-center options ready. Follow utility and emergency instructions; never run a generator, grill, camp stove, or other fuel-burning equipment indoors or near openings.

After the heat event, record any persistent comfort, moisture, or equipment issue for a qualified professional. Skip any task that does not apply to your climate, equipment, ownership responsibilities, or safety situation.
